Like most employees, Autistic employees tend to thrive in workplaces that are organised with clear roles and responsibilities. Autistic employees can work effectively in structured or flexible settings, depending on the individual.

To maximise an employee’s strengths, Autistic employees need a clear understanding of the expectations and productivity requirements of their position. Employers also need to understand the individual’s strengths, support needs and preferred working styles. This information should be exchanged during induction into a new employer or role.

Because the support needs of Autistic employees varies over time and context as well as between individuals, this information should be kept updated through regular check-ins between employers and employees.

There are some simple strategies that employers can adopt to make their employee induction more inclusive for Autistic employees.
